The New Jedi Order is the new series of books about the Star Wars Universe. The New Jedi Order has rejuvenated the people's interest in Star Wars in different ways. It has brought an end to some of Star Wars most beloved characters, brought a new never before seen enemy, and revolutionized the way the Star Wars universe now functions.
In the New Jedi Order, two of Star War's most beloved were killed. These two characters were Chewbacca and Anakin Solo. Chewbacca had been around since the first film was released and was well loved by most fans. Anakin Solo was born in the books that followed the movies and he was becoming very popular with the readers. This allowed for character development for characters that have personalities that are hard to change. .
Rich Handley said that the character development was stuck in a rut [.] Shapio's goal was to shake up the characters and to show that they can't survive everything that is thrown at them (February, 2003, p. 32). This was another thing that the character deaths helped to accomplish. The main characters had survived over forty years without the death of any of them. This left a sense of invincibility around the characters. With the death of a main character, it shows that the main characters are just as vulnerable as the rest of the Star Wars universe. .
Chewbacca's death had a major effect on the character Han Solo. Han Solo changed from the smart-witted and lovable character that fans all over the world love to a very depressed and angry man. Han blamed mostly himself for the death of Chewbacca even though there was nothing he could do to save him. For the next couple of book, Han stayed very depressed a stayed away from his family and friends. After those couple of books, Han dropped out of contact with all of his loved ones and went adventuring by himself. In more recent books, Han has resumed contact with his friends and family and begun to fight along side them.
