Tony doesn't hear things that happen in the house in detail, but he knows to stay away from the place because his mother told him so. Eventually he finds that the place caused evil, not directly but lead to the killing of a good person in Narcisco.
The Jupiter Tree was a place that was not evil in the way that sins were usually committed there. It just worked out that there were a lot of death that occurred at the Jupiter Tree. You look back and find that Narcisco was killed there and then Tenorio got his eye slashed out near that area. Then later on he gets killed at the tree after killing Ultima's bird at the tree. What ends up killing Ultima, not knowing if the bird dying and her dying right after was a coincidence or that the bird was really her spirit. That we will never know. But the tree never was mentioned in the story except when there was a killing. Figuring out why they used that spot is very hard. .
The killing of Lupito at the very beginning of the story made Tony think of things that he probably never should have been introduced at the young age. Lupito shot the sheriff because of the war. It had driven him crazy. But this brought the idea of evil to Tony and why some things happen. Bad things at least.
Moving on to the good side of this story you will find that a lot of the character's that are good end up usually getting rid of the evil. Ultima comes in to the story at the very beginning. As Tony sees the killing of Lupito he runs home in shock. As he is running home he hears the sound of Ultima's owl, which he has just started to hear when she came to live in his house. This owl gives him a safe path towards home before anyone can find that he saw the action that occurred during that night. Then as Tony walks in the house he is very quiet about what he saw happen and then finally breaks his silence with Ultima. She comforts him but also says that she knew what happened out there and how he saw the killing of Lupito.
