Beauty Sickness

Similar to the literal meanings discussed above, beauty sickness can be defined as a modern disease with a group of symptomatic problems accompanied by physical (extreme disparagement of the body features), psychological (obsessive focus on the disliked body sites that severely interferes with the person's existence) and social (self-evaluation at such a level that interferes with social and occupational functioning) abnormalities that take place when the society endlessly puts attention on trivia of outer appearance.
People in modern society are very likely to be affected with this so-called epidemic disease, beauty sickness, with the public's rigid and biased perceptions on beauty that undermine our self-image deliberately. Dr. Morgan, who is very specialized in plastic surgery, points out the fact in one of his articles entitled "Beauty" that " we are constantly engaging in a beauty contest." The way he depicts the concerns of people in getting dressed up every morning is quite vivid and visible. As we stand in front of the mirror every time, we just cannot help but repetitively ask ourselves questions like "Should I wear this or that" or " Should I wear a tie or high heels" and something like "Is this the best way I can be?" as if we were preparing for a beauty contest in the whole world. .
Likewise, the same illustration can also be seen in an article written by a famous model Karinna Kittle. She begins the article by empathizing the readers that it is a frequently-seen phenomenon that many people nowadays are continually comparing themselves to those images that are considered to be beautiful and thus develop inferior feelings that we are nothing perfect. Kittle describes the kind of situation she has suffered by saying that "the outer competition I am participating in and witnessing is affecting me negatively, I simultaneously begin to feel little desire to continue modeling or acting and, overnight, I become ill.
