Glory: The 54th Regiment

"Show us a little dance nigger boys!" These words were spoken by white individuals who did not have any reliance in the blacks attempt to become soldiers. This quote demonstrates the idea that there was a lot of discrimination and prejudice against the blacks, the fact that white individuals treated these black soldiers in a lowery manner, demonstrated how blacks felt hatred against whites and felt as if they were lesser beings. There was also a great amount of generals who did not think that the blacks were capable of being relied on to defeat the enemy in the south, but Colonel Shaw always maintained his faith and defended them. "They have risked their lives to save their life, my life, they have given their freedom." These words demonstrate the acknowledgement only felt by Colonel Shaw towards the blacks, he understood and realized that the blacks should be honored in just attempting to defend the lives of Americans. "They"re little monkey children that don't know how to control themselves!" Almost every major in the regiment viewed the black soldiers in a lowery manner, not treating them equally as how white individuals were treated. Another example that demonstrated how these men were very cruel with the colored men was the occurrence when Trip got whipped for trying to find himself a pair of shoes. These soldiers were not given proper equipment for their training in the war, therefore many of them were became badly injured. .
"You men enlisted in this regiment, on the understanding that you would be paid the regular army wage, of $13 a month. This morning I have been notified, that since you are a colored regiment, you will be paid $10 a month." Colonel Shaw declared that every colored individual will be paid $10 a month because of their color, demonstrating the hypocrisy and idea concerning the equality of all the soldiers in the military. "A black soldier can stop a bullet as good as a white soldier, and for less money too!" Trip was a colored individual who was very strong minded and had a lot of pride, he suggested that no one should accept their payments, that the whites were not being fair with them.
