He would work 4 days per week in the mines. He worked the farm in the evenings and when he was home from the mines. She recalls him fondly even though he died when she was just six years old. He was a very loving man towards his wife and children. .
             Norine's mother was a homemaker and she has no recollections of her every working outside the home. She worked the farm when her husband was away and canned anything and everything. Norine recalls helping her mother can when she could barely reach the counter. She recalls her mother with great love and admiration. She was a wonderful woman who raised us all well, despite being a widow. .
             Norine remembers having many chores as a child and little time to actually play. She recalls having to milk a cow every morning before she walked the 3 miles to school. She also talked about making soap with her mother and the canning of fruits and vegetables to feed her family. Norine talks with great pride about helping to provide food during the winter when the crops and money were lean. She also has very fond memories of using the big floor loom at her grandma's house to make rugs and blankets. She said it was more of a treat than a chore. Norine says they did not get to do this very often, as the material was scarce and expensive. She also recalled helping her mother with her younger siblings. When asked about the things she liked to do when they played, she responded they didn't play very much. She did say she loved to climb trees, even if it was to pick apples for canning. She also liked to ride the farm horses, even if it was to haul wood. .
             Norine left school at 16 in 1928 and went to work at the coat factory. She made $7.14 a week. Norine recalls that was pretty good money at that time. She worked as a sleeve setter, which required a fair amount of practice to be good at. Norine worked there for 14 years. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Taylor Wood.
