"On this particular morning, the morning that Candido Rincon began to feel he"d lost control of his wife, Delaney was up at seven, as usual to drip Kyra's coffee- (30) As a result, she feels accomplished, loved, respected and has a strong sense of self worth, enabling her to be extremely successful.
In contrast to the logical and socially acceptable way Delaney and Kyra's relationship works, Candido and America are looked down upon in American society today. The first relationship faux pas they have is their gigantic age difference. America is only seventeen, while Candido is sixteen years older and already partially gray. In fact, he was married first to America's older sister Ressureccion before America. As Illegal aliens, neither of them were consistently employed. Candido did not appreciate it when America worked. Quite the opposite was true. He saw her as his responsibility, and when he could not take care of her, he felt like a failure. When Candido was run over by Delaney and was unable to work, America was forced to provide for them. One morning while he was still healing, she got up to go find work. When he tried to stop her, she reminded him of is inabilities, " and then he rose up off the blanket and slapped her. Hard." (80) This would not be appropriate or accepted in American culture today, which is based on equality. Because America and Candido are immigrants they are stuck somewhere in the middle of their heritage and trying to fit in this new land. It was emotionally straining on America as a seventeen year old pregnant woman to be forbidden to be proud of or excited about her accomplishments because they injured her husband's pride. After working long and hard to earn money for food for him, "The face she turned to him was joyful, proud, radiant-- she"d earned money, her first money ever, and they were going to eat on it, stuff themselves --but her eyes dodged away from his- (123).
