The Godfather

The Godfather is unhappy that Bonasera has not made himself a part of the traditional family, isolating himself and staying away from his business. However, he also dislikes that Bonasera is not referring to him as Godfather, his official Mafia position. Don Corleone's feelings indicate that he believes that Bonasera should show proper reverence to him since he is a high-powered Mafia leader. Bonasera must acknowledge the Godfather as a powerful man, and also be his friend in order for Don Corleone to do a favor for him.
Bonasera approaches the Godfather, asks him to be his friend (calling him Godfather), and kisses his hand. This action is a symbol of respect, loyalty, and love for Don Corleone. The Godfather agrees to do the favor for him, in exchange for a future favor. He tells him to "accept this justice as a gift on my daughter's wedding day-. The significance of this statement is that Don Corleone cannot refuse a request on the day of his daughter's wedding "it is a Sicilian tradition. This point brings up the idea of the traditional Sicilian Corleone family, which lives by these rules as well. Whether a Mafia or a family request, Vito Corleone is expected to grant his family and friend's wishes.
The camera then direct cuts to the wedding reception, where Don Corleone's daughter Connie is celebrating her marriage to Carlo Ruzzi, a small-time bookie. The mise-en-scene has Carlo, along with the rest of the men at the reception, wearing a dark suit, which signifies that he has been accepted into the Mafia family and traditional family by marrying Connie. Shorter takes and high key lighting is used, indicating the cheerful and light tone of the occasion. Traditional Sicilian rituals including Mazurka music, a family portrait, dancing, wine, lasagna, and the cutting of the cake foster a sense of traditional family. In addition, the Godfather is dancing with his wife in the middle of the party, rotating the opposite direction than the other couples.
