The Revolt of "Mother"

The effectiveness of The Revolt of "Mother" is shown in the way in which the conflict between the characters is explored and in how this creates an engaging tension. .
From the very start of the story the reader can sense that there is conflict between the unnamed man and the woman. In this opening encounter, the man looks to put the woman in her "rightful" place and commands her to " tend to (her) own affairs". This is an extremely effective opening as from the start, we become interested in the story because we are now interested in their relationship - we crave to discover why the man possesses this attitude towards the woman featured in the story.
The story is told in a third-person narrative which is an effective device as the narrator does not appear to know all the minute details of the family and as a result allows Wilkins Freeman to expose the structure and conflicts within the family gradually as a means of creating intrigue and increasing tension. As the story progresses, we learn that the pair are a married couple with two children. Our interest for the story deepens as we learn more about the conflict between husband and wife. After hinting at new conflict with the raising of a new barn, Wilkins Freeman exposes conflict, not between husband and wife, but between male and female as we learn that their son Sammy also knew about the new barn. This exposition is largely effective as it highlights a clear divide between the male and female members of the household.
The way in which the family functions can be discerned from the implications of the way the characters act towards each other, and in the things that they say. The familiarity in which the women set about doing the dishes, and the understanding they seem to each other strongly, suggests that it is commonplace for the men to go out and work whilst the women stay home and cook. The dominance of the males in the household is further emphasised by having the father "ask a blessing" at the rather rushed encounter at the dinner table.
