The Fourteenth Colony: An Exam

The Eddy Revolution was a miniscule and ultimately futile attempt at revolt led by Jonathan Eddy in the Chignecto region. There was no chance for its success but it shows that a real invasion of Nova Scotia would have been supported.
An example of the misunderstanding and lack of knowledge of the public opinion of Nova Scotia by the Americans was that of John Paul Jones. He was a rebel naval hero who led raiders in sacking coastal villages of Nova Scotia, including Canso.3 He burned buildings, looted homes, stole vessels and destroyed the local fishing industry.4 He obviously would not have done this if they knew that they were quietly supported by many Nova Scotians. This type of behaviour was beneficial to British supporters as it drained greatly the pro-revolution feelings.
The government tried to quell sedition in Halifax through both executive and judicial measures such as prosecution and persecution, legal repression and harassment.5 The use of formal law shows the seriousness of the response to the American Revolution in Nova Scotia. It shows how loyal the government was to Britain, mostly because the government was made up of British officials. If they did not think that the rebellion could come to Nova Scotia then they would have probably let the British citizens get away with things such as harassment but they would not have created laws supporting and even encouraging it. The government's genuine seriousness to rebellious talk was also shown by how the laws and justice was applied. Suspected rebel sympathizers were arrested and imprisoned without fair trial for repeated indictments.6 Even on the off chance that there was a trial, it always just happened to be delayed through repetitive continuances.7.
High treason was a charge that was difficult to establish on someone due to legal constraints on the government, so they tried most suspected rebels on the lesser charge of sedation instead.
