This data is used to publish annually "Income Related Benefits Estimates of Take-Up" with recent figures being for 2000/2001. This is the report that I will be playing a crucial role in contributing to throughout my placement.
The Income Analysis 3 group concentrates on producing the annual publication of 'Households Below Average Income'. Additionally, any subsequent analysis in response to enquiries is produced. The Households Below Average Income' contains a plethora of information including, inter alia, drawing up and monitoring production plans, derivation of an HBAI data file based on FRS survey information, sampling error analysis, the analysis presented in the volume (in conjunction with IA5), liaison with the publisher and press office, and, with the PSE team, Ministerial briefings about publication. In addition, along with IA5, the unit is responsible for handling parliamentary questions (PQ's) and requests for information from policy branches, other government departments, academics and the public. A supplementary duty for the team is to liaise with other government departments on publications where there is an income interest and briefs Ministers as appropriate.
The Income Analysis 4 team has the responsibility for producing statistics based around the individual incomes of women and men within a household. Moreover the IA4 team investigate the relationship between these and the social and economic factors such as benefit receipt, labour market status, marital status and child care responsibilities. Interestingly, income of both men and women does not only come from earnings, but also benefits received in their own name or in their own right, pensions and investment income.
Additionally, the team provide advice on the individual incomes of women and men for policy needs, principally for members of the Women and Equality Unit.
Income Analysis 5 main duties are primarily on briefing and analysis on the distribution of income, projections of low incomes and the position of benefit recipients with the income distribution.
