Religion vs. Science:

Darwin's explanation of the evolutionary process meets all the mandatory criteria to be deemed a theory, however many science teachers are opting to de-emphasize or all together omit this major unifying concept of science because of religious conflict, intimidation of content, administrative policies, and/or legal issues. In order for students to become scientifically literate citizens, the theory of evolution needs to be taught in American schools. The evolution theory began to take form in Darwin's youth. It was during this time that while on a .
voyage around the world via the Galapagos Islands near the coast of South America, he began to notice variations in some traits such as size and coloration of animals of the same species. Darwin read an essay by Thomas Malthus, a clergyman and economist. Malthus had correlated famine, disease, and war with population size. According to Malthus, humans tend to reproduce faster than food supplies, living space, and other resources can be sustained. The larger a population gets, the more people there are to reproduce in each generation. As the population gets larger, resources dwindle and the struggle to survive begins. People begin to starve, get sick, and thus engage in competition for the remaining resources (Raven, P.H. & Johnson, G.B., 1999). Malthus" essay had laid the foundations for Darwin's explanations of his observations of the population of 13 finch species distributed throughout the Islands.
In 1859 Darwin published On the Origin of Species, a detailed support of his theory of evolution by natural selection. In summary, his theory has four essential components. The first is overproduction. All individuals within a population have the capacity to produce more offspring than the environment can sustain. This phenomenon is also known as mass production. Secondly, there is a struggle for existence because of the large population.
