Gonzalez tries to persuade the reader in many ways; the first being logic. Gonzalez mentions the unfairness of trying to teach a student basic reading and writing skills when they do not even speak English. Gonzalez states that "Reading programs taught in English to children with Spanish as their first language waste their acquired linguistic attributes and also impede learning by forcing them to absorb skills of reading simultaneously with a new language." (Gonzalez p. 100) Basically what Gonzalez means by this is that schools try and teach student something new when they do not really have the fundamentals down to be ready to learn. It is like taking a math test on multiplication and not knowing how to add.
Gonzalez expresses ethos by examples also. In his opening sentences it almost seems as if he is asking his reader to consider the situation of a child who cannot read or write English. "If we accept that a child cannot learn unless taught through the language he speaks and understands." (Gonzalez 99). Gonzalez also asks the reader to take into consideration that language is an important part of culture and that it is important to retain and maintain it. Gonzalez seems to being aiming at the reader with this example as a kind of emotional appeal to try and get the reader to show sympathy for the child and what the child would be losing in his or her learning and how they would be left out or behind and the difficulty of learning in another language.
Gonzalez expresses a lot of Pathos because he uses a lot of statistics, panels, and statements made by other people. He counter attacks William Bennet for expressing his views and attacks on bilingual education. William Bennet is wants to keep the common language of the United States intact and sees the bilingual program as a problem that could affect that guise. I think showing the opposition on more than one occasion was a good idea because it gave the reader a chance to see how illogical the other side of the argument is.
