The next person we meet while attending one of these cancer meetings is Marla Singer played by Helena Bonham Carter. She is what Jack calls "A Faker" (Jack is also, she points out). Marla starts to attend all the meetings Jack is going to and he starts not being able to sleep anymore.
Jack finally confronts Marla about it. He explains how he needs these meetings but she does not care. This turns the relationship sour. They end up exchanging numbers and working out a deal to spilt up the meetings so they would not have to see each other and Jack could get some sleep again.
Jack is a recall expert; he travels around checking out a car manufacturer's accidents that have casualties. He is the person who determines if the company should make a recall on the problem or not. During one of these trips he meets Tyler Durden for the first time, on a plane. They talk for a little while and Tyler gives Jack one of his cards and Tyler leaves.
After getting off the plane and arriving at his apartment Jack sees that it has been blown up. Just his no other apartment was harmed and Jack had nowhere else to turn but Tyler. He meets Tyler at a bar and that where the audience understands that Jack and Tyler are almost complete opposites. Tyler likes things chaotic and Jack likes things nice and neat.
After having some beer together and upon leaving the bar, Tyler turns to Jack and says, "Four pitchers of beer and you still can't ask, just ask." Tyler wants Jack to ask if he could stay at his place so he does and Tyler lets him stay. While they were leaving Tyler says, "Hit me". This caught Jack off guard but after a while Jack hits Tyler, this is how they start fight club.
This becomes a regular thing for them; they would go to the bar and fight each other in the parking lot. People started to become interested in this fight club, it was getting bigger and bigger and Tyler and Jack were the head of this club of mayhem.
