Does God Exist?

This clear and distinctness of a supreme being gives it the validity to have such conclusions drawn. .
To assess something as clear and distinct and to conclude from this assessment the something is true is, in and of itself, a good argument. Where Descartes falls into trouble, however, is when he describes his proof most commonly known as the Cartesian Circle. The Cartesian Circle is an attempt by Descartes to prove God whereby he injects his idea of clear and distinct thinking. Descartes states that what he clearly and distinctly perceives to be true is true. His reason for this is because God does not deceive. And lastly he says that God exists because he clearly and distinctly perceives it to be true. This circular proof is where Descartes" critics have a field day. Obviously this proof has a fault inherent in its foundation. Descartes, very cleverly, however, counters it by saying clear and distinct thinking does not need to be justified. It is the foundation for our entire way of thinking, an intellectual measuring stick of which everything is tested against. .
Descartes" arguments toward the existence of God can basically be summed up in one way. Since I have a notion of perfection, which clearly cannot originate from me, an imperfect being, it must come from something outside of me, possessing in it this perfection. The argument is strong, however, it is also flawed.
Descartes, in his essence, is a very logical thinker. This logic is what draws me toward him and what makes me want to believe him. However, a few situations arise in my thinking that put him at fault. The first of which is sprouted by his notion of clear and distinct thinking (as is the second, but as we will see, in an indirect manner). Descartes" world, composed of things outside of him, many of which are thinking things, has diversity among it as seen in all situations including individuals. The term "thinking thing", in itself, implies our individualism insofar as we think for ourselves.
