             Secondhand smoke is estimated to cause three thousand lung cancer deaths every year. The mixture of smoke given off by pipes, cigarettes, and cigars contains four thousand substances. More than forty of these four thousand substances are said to cause various cancers in animals and humans. Secondhand smoke is estimated to cause between one hundred-fifty thousand and three hundred thousand lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children. Between two hundred thousand and one million asthmatic children's' condition is made worse by secondhand smoke. Exposure to secondhand smoke can also cause irritation of the throat, eye, and nose. Secondhand smoke is also known as environmental tobacco smoke, passive smoking, and involuntary smoking. Secondhand smoke has been identified as a known cause of lung cancer in humans.
             People think that when they smoke they are smoking pure tobacco, and think nothing else of the other ingredients in cigarettes.
