The Stranger

Which is perfectly fine in his mind because the sun distracts him, but in the eyes of the alienating society, he should be crying. Anyone would be tired after a sleepless night, but Mersault has to be thinking about his mother all the time because of the society which makes all the decisions for all individuals. He always did what he thought he should, not caring about the upcoming consequences. Just before his execution, Mersault meets the Chaplain for his last time and a conversation begins which dose not flow as the Chaplain would have liked it to. "Why have you refused to see me?" he asked. I said that I didn't believe in God. He wanted to know if I was sure and I said that I didn't see any reason to ask myself that question: it seemed unimportant. In any case, I may not have been sure of what really did interest me, but I was absolutely sure about what didn't." (116) Even when Mersault knows that he is going to die, he will still not hide what is in his heart because he has always been that way. Even if it might benefit him a little, and it might just be possible to save him, he will say what he believes. He is too honest and the society thinks that he is crazy; his honesty unfortunately leads to disaster. Just before he was going to be taken to get his head chopped off in front of thousands of people, Mersault realizes something about his mother; ironically it just could not have happened before. .
"So close to death, Maman must have felt free then and ready to live it all over again. Nobody, nobody had the right to cry over her. And I felt ready to live it all over again too. As if that blind rage had washed me clean, rid me of hope; for the first time, in that night alive with signs and stars, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world." (122) Poor Mersault realized that in this world society means everything, and he was ready to live life all over again, just if he could.
