Comfort Zones

There are many people in many different places around the world that live in one place all their life. When they are given the opportunity to move to another place they decline the opening for a new change of environment, and perhaps a more fulfilling ambiance. They develop a sense of security where they are and therefore decide to stay within that comfort zone. Ernest Hemingway, in the short stories "Hills Like White Elephants- and "A Clean Well Lighted Place,"" is able to show how people, no matter where they are in life, will stay in a comfort zone in order to stay happy, rather than making a change or stepping to the other side to see if that can bring more happiness.
             .
Staying inside a comfort zone to a person can escalate so intensely that they will put a heavy burden on a loved one to fulfill their desire. In "Hills Like White Elephants- the man is strongly indicating that he wants the girl to get an abortion in order for his life and their relationship to remain the same. He says comments like "It's an awfully simple operation Jig."" "It's not really an operation at all,""(275) implying that he has no care for her feelings and opinions. He is asking her to make the biggest sacrifice of her life in order to stay comfortable. The man is not even considering the opportunities and happiness having a child and raising a family can bring. Hemingway shows this when Jig is saying "we can have all this- (276) and the and returns to that by saying "no we can't- (276) repeatedly. He once sarcastically states, "You've got to realize, I don't want you to do it if you don't want to. I'm perfectly willing to go through with it if it means anything to you.""(276) He tries to make her feel guilty for not wanting to keep his life the way he is used to and is happy with. Hemingway is saying that for some people, when they reach a certain level of happiness and stability they are comfortable with, they can become so blind and will go so far as to make someone sacrifice their own happiness to remain constant and in their comfort zone.
