Death Penalty


This money could be used to create a better society, where possibly the murders wouldn"t happen in the first place. "The Miami Herald reported that Florida, with one of the nation's largest death rows, has estimated that the true cost of each execution is approximately 3.2 million dollars, or approximately six times the cost of life-imprisonment sentence."              There is also a chance that the innocent was in the wrong place at the wrong time. A decent amount of evidence and a good lawyer could send an innocent person to prison for life, and even death row. One could be spending and ending his or her life in captivity for simply walking down the wrong street at the wrong time. That person wouldn"t deserve to serve time, when it's not rightfully his. This is a fault in the justice system, which is not easy to overcome.
             The death penalty is also cruel and unusual punishment. To extinguish a person's life is cruel, no matter what way it was administered. Many states believe it is ok to execute someone simply because they have changed from the electric chair to the gas chamber, but anyway of executing someone is barbaric. If every crime were tooth for tooth, and eye for eye, what would happen to society? "Upholding the constitutionality of a Washington state death penalty statute, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that death by hanging is not cruel and unusual punishment." (EBSCOhost) How is this not cruel and unusual punishment? Making a person wait while you tie a rope around their neck and push them to their death. The gas chambers wouldn"t be as cruel as hanging. .

(PBS.org) In this article, a mans life is taken in front of witnesses, which have no right watching as he is leaves this world.
