My Brother Sam is Dead

The story takes place in Redding, Connecticut during the American Revolutionary War in the 1770's. My Brother Sam Is Dead was written by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier. This book is narrated by the main character by Tim Meeker. The Meeker family was managing absolutely fine until Sam told his loyalist family that he would be fighting the British and become a rebel. As the war continued, Tim had to make a choice to either become a loyalist like his father, who he admired and loved, or become a rebel like his brother who he always looked up to. .
The book takes place in Reading, Connecticut where the winter months bring about frequent snow storms and mostly cold winter days. The snow storms allow the Meekers to butcher their cattle and store the meet under the hay piles until the spring season.
In the 1770's, the Meeker family lived off their farm to support their tavern. They harvested vegetables, milked and sold their cattle, and used their horses for transportation. Now in the 1990's, we typically do not grow our own food but find ourselves going to the grocery store for our necessary goods. Horses are very rarely used to get around. Cars are our main transportation. I fell that if the American Revolutionary War did not occur, Sam probably would have gone off to New York City to become a doctor where he would have helped many people instead of suffering his horrible death.
The American Revolutionary War was one of the biggest problems in the book. Another existing problem was the fact that Sam told his family he was going to fight against the British. Mr. and Mrs. Meeker would not have Sam fight in the war against the British since he was raised as a loyalist. As the war went on, many people suffered including the Meekers. It was very hard for the Meekers to run the tavern with little cattle and small amounts of money. Unfortunately, this problem was solved with two terrible tragedies, the death of Sam and his father.
