Caputo graduated from the advanced course in August of 63. From there he went on to Officers" Basic School. This was more technical things than anything. He found Officers" school more pleasant than OSC. However he made the decision that the essence of the Marine Corps experience was pain. Through the pain Caputo also learned about loyalty and courage. He began to relate every aspect of the world to war. He was ready to fight.
Caputo finally got what he was waiting for. They were going to Vietnam. There was nothing but excitement as they were finally making there way to where the action was. Caputo as well as the rest of the marines where surprised to find that with Vietnam brought boredom. Day after day they sat around just waiting. It became a deadly routine of keeping watch and repairing things. Caputo began to think of the war as "phony." There was always talk of action, but nothing ever followed through. War wasn't amounting to Caputo's expectations. The men began to go into depression from the idleness of it all. Finally after day and days of the boredom, the men's spirits were lifted when it was decided that they were going to chase after the enemy. Once again he was disappointed when the actual combat merely became a manhunt. The combat never met up with Caputo's expectations and he began to realize there wasn't much chance of being a hero. All war really amounted to was people getting shot and soldiers losing their friends. This is when Caputo decided to get an administrative job. He began to see war as something breaking families apart. Caputo no longer saw war as a thrill. He no longer liked war. .
While Caputo served his administrative jobs he learned of the deaths of his close friends. One of his men was shot in the back while another was shot by a sniper. Sullivan, the man killed by the sniper, had an expecting wife. He took this news hard. As people kept dying Caputo began to think of himself as "Officer of the Dead.
