National Basketball Association

It even sells television rights to broadcasters in countries where it does no other business. In 1970, the NBA sold cable rights for $400,000. Today, those same rights are now worth $90 million. The ever growing popularity of players such as Michael Jordan, Vince Carter and Shaquille O"Neal help the NBA to bring in sales revenues with the sale of jerseys, shoes and memorabilia. Just think, when the new Michael Jordan shoes came out, they were being sold for $200 a pair. How many children around the globe begged their parents for these because they wanted to "Be Like Mike.".
The demographic and cultural environments speak for themselves. The NBA is reaching new markets that it has never targeted before. The league is accomplishing this by having a number of live events, attractions, and grassroots activities aimed at a broad demographic scope of fans and to allow them to connect with the brand. Among these activities is "2Ball," a program that teaches basic basketball skills to children. In 1996, the league tested "2Ball" in 500 schools in the United Kingdom where 25 percent of the participants touched a basketball for the first time. The next year, 2,400 schools in Germany, France and the UK signed up. Also in 1996, the NBA Board of Governors announced the Women's National Basketball Association would begin play in June of 1997, giving females an equal opportunity to dazzle fans around the globe. For years, Major League Baseball has thrived in markets such as Asia, which statistically is the most populated continent on the planet. With the recent draft of a player like Yao Ming number one overall by the Houston Rockets, who was born in China, the league will get maximum exposure there. There were a total of 14 players taken from countries such as China, Italy, Brazil, Slovenia, Yugoslavia, Spain, Australia, Croatia, and Germany. This goes to show that the sport that James Naismith created in the late 1800's with soccer balls and peach baskets is not just an American sport.
