             Just as it took many years in the south to finally desegregate after Brown v. Board of Education, court cases must ascend over the course of the next few years to dramatically impact gays in the work place, gay marriage, gay adoption, gays in the military. Canada, on June 11, ruled same sex marriages were legal. Many Americans are crossing the border to Canada to be married. Legal experts are divided as to whether this type of union should be recognized here in our country.
             One of the first cases to reach the Supreme Court will be involving Julie and Hillary Goodridge. The Massachusetts couple's case will be decided by the State Supreme Court. They hope their state will be the first state to recognize gay marriage.
             Most states allow single gays to adopt children. Studies have shown that there are no detrimental effects on children of gay individuals.
             In 1992 only one of the Fortune 500 companies offered benefits to gay partners. Today the number is 197. (Evans, p.4.).
             The most immediate legal impact will occur in custody battles. The Newsweek article mentioned a Virginia custody battle where the judge attacked a lesbian, making her detail her sexual activity, then classifying her behavior as immoral.
