Review Of RENT

There were so many amazing performances. One of the best performances was given by Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi. She was Mimi in the original New York cast, and you could tell. She had certain ease with her character that no one else had. You could tell that she knew her charter and was completely comfortable as her. Another great performance was given by Shaun Earl as Angel. It truly takes lot of talent to be able to dance around in spike heels, jump on tables, and still sing a song, which is exactly what this amazing man did. A performance that gave me chills was Dean Balkwill as Roger. He had a certain intracable quality that made him perfect for this role. When he sang "Glory" he made me cry, he puts such emotion into his voice at all times, it's almost exhausting to watch him on stage. One last performance that I enjoyed was Brian M. Love's portrayal of Benjamin Coffin III (Benny). He had a very sly, materialistic thing that was perfectly fitting. A performance that I was not especially impressed with was that of Kamilah Martin as Joanne. She made Joanne whinier than her character should be. .
there were many different technical aspects of RENT. My favorite was the lighting. It was perfect for whatever was going on. A time when I really noticed it was when they were singing "Santa Fe". They brought up the lights, and it was like I could feel the warmth of the Santa Fe desert. Also, during "Contact" the red, orange, and yellow lights gave it an interesting dream-like feeling. Another big part of the technical side of RENT was the sound. I don't know why, but I was very impressed that the actors had on tiny microphone headsets. Also, the band was right on stage, so the sound was excellent. The set in general was so amazing! I had listened to the soundtrack a few times before I had seen the set, and wondered how all of the different locations would fit onto one stage. I really liked how they used different levels of the stage at all times.
