Sex Is For Adults

But even if sex education did work, birth control does not work. Well at least birth control does not work often enough (some odd 18% of teen girls on birth control will still get pregnant with in the first year of use) and on top of that "using birth control has increased the risk of contracting STDs" (The Abstinence Box). The teens think that because they are using birth control then they don't have to use a condom; well by not using a condom they risk contracting all kinds of STDs.
The Alan Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that specializes in reproductive health, estimates that up to thirty six percent of women in their early twenties will get pregnant while relying on the male to use a condom within the first year the two are sexually active (meaning that even with the condom on the women will still get pregnant, condoms are not foolproof); and with the supposed foolproof pill, up to eighteen percent of teen girls will get pregnant within the first year. If you project these failure rates a few years ahead of now, unintended pregnancies begin to look uncomfortably close to inevitability. This isn't saying that teen pregnancies is going to be the so called norm, this is saying that it won't be quite as a shocker to see a teen girl walking around pregnant.
By today's standards, current recommendations for "safer" sex are too unrealistic. Most young people know that before they have sexual intercourse with another person, both people should exchange detailed sexual histories. Ideally the next step would be a tandem AIDS tests; from there, if both can forge a monogamy pact they will only have sexual intercourse with the use of a condom for the first six months. Six months after the first AIDS test, both partners should be tested again. Now the question is, do people really hammer out these elaborate social contracts every time Cupid calls? Of course not, which is why teen sex is leading all too frequently to casual promiscuity, abortion, single motherhood, STDs, and AIDS.
