The Heart


Parents would ask their son, "Where were you last night?" and he would feel that it is none of their business. However, as their son further ignores their questions, parents become further anxious and tend to ask further; consequently, the teenager would be disgusted by his parent's constant snooping into his affairs and would eventually stay away from home as much as possible. He would hang out with friends rather than come home for dinner and would feel more welcome among his peers rather than two inquisitive adults.
             As adolescents further harbor a negative attitude towards their parents, they begin to depend upon their friends more than they would their parents. Girls feel that their over-protective parents are rather authoritarian and thus interfering in their social lives, while boys are appalled by their parents who seem to be outright nosy all the time. However, the urge to get away is usually provoked because of some form of guilt. Teenagers who seem to be turning away from his or her parents could be avoiding their parent's questions such as "Do you smoke or drink?" or "Do you do drugs?" Most teenagers are exposed to cigarettes by junior high, and drugs and alcohol by high school, and so they feel a need to distance themselves from parents who seem to pry into their everyday affairs. Furthermore, many troubled adolescents are afraid of their parent's reaction to such delicate issues and thus many teenagers tend to alienate themselves from their parents. The alienation could be!.
             because of the guilt they feel, and the closer they are to their parents, they would have to either lie that much more. Therefore, troubled teenagers instead turn to their friends for help; however, friends could only help so far (they were the ones who introduced such habits in the first place). Adolescents feel that their friends, unlike parents, are more sympathetic to their problems and more understanding.
