The movie, "Thelma & Louise," may look like just another girl-buddy road trip picture, but it is definitely more. Donald Williams ( a psychological reviewer ) quotes, " The film challenged our genderizing routines by showing us a "road and buddy" movie with women in the lead roles. Thelma and Louise get in dangerous trouble, enjoy themselves, and unmask the other sex--actions normally reserved for men." This movie is about two women that are fed up of their boring everyday lives and decide to take a "road trip." It may appear harmless, but little did they know a tragic incident at an off road bar would change their "weekend getaway" into a speeding chase that ends their lives. The two women either struggle to break free or to let go.but never successfully or for very long. .
Examples of archetypes in the story are found in the characters. For instance, J.D., a man that Thelma meets on the road, tempts her with his good looks and politeness, then deceives her and steals all of her and Louise's money and hope. This man resembles the snake in the story of Adam and Eve because the snake also tempted Eve into something that she would later on regret. Darryl ( Thelma's controllive husband) resembles every man in every story that holds the main character back from doing something she he wants to do. For example, Saul trying to hold back David in the story of " David and Goliath." Thelma and Louise are both archetypal characters in the story because they are the normal girls that no one thinks can do any harm or make any difference. The people that judged them were obviously wrong. A story that proves this as an example would be " The Sword and the Stone" where the main character is the last person that anyone would have ever believed could pull the sword from the stone. Archtypical symbols in this story were mountains (or in this case a cliff) meaning a meeting place between heaven, earth, and eternity.
