This is not courage but just pure ignorance. This ignorance of his safety goes along with his ignorance of the war at hand. These feelings seem to go along with his lifestyle; at the moment he really does not have anything to lose. .
             Now he is still energetic about being in the front line and doing anything he can in the war. During this time he meets Catherine, his soon to be love of his life. He has never experienced the feeling of being in love. All he has had is one sexual conquest after another, each meaning less then the one before it. The call girls in town seem to meet all his needs at the. He finds himself attempting to make Catherine another one of his victories. For the first time in his life a woman actually called him out on what he was trying to do. She made the comment, "This is a rotten game we are play, isn't it?" (Pg.31). Henry is awestruck, almost speechless, but he goes back to his old game and tells her that he loves her; even though he knows he does not at the moment. Henry goes on with this game until one night when he is not allowed to see Catherine. He for the first time in his life he feels a feeling of emptiness based on a girl. It sometimes takes losing something before really realizes what was had. From then on everyday he falls deeper and deeper in love with Miss Barkley.
             Once his heart has fallen in love his mindset about the war changes more and more each day. Where at one point he was excited about going to the front line he now misses Catherine each time he is away. She gives him a reason to not want to be on the front line. He cherishes every moment Catherine and him spend together. With time he will completely denounce the war, it just takes awhile to completely fall in love with Catherine. .
