Becoming Male

Genetics may control our race, hair color, eye color, and gender, but as Henslin pointed out early in article 13, socializations decides our sexuality. My childhood was much like that which was discussed in this article. I was allowed to play outside longer, go farther down the street, get my clothes dirtier, watch different things on TV, and stay up later than my older sister. And being the smart mouth kid I was, I rubbed it in her face every time I got to do something and she didn't. .
I guess watching my Dad and brother that was eight years older than me, sort of made me who I am today. Watching them every day and trying to be just like them. Also just like in the article, I was dressed in sailor suits and little business suits at a young age, on up to my adolescence where I was given football and baseball uniforms to play in. I even had cowboys and Indians on my wallpaper in my room growing up. From then on I wanted to become a pro football player more than anything, not to mention I was encouraged to play because I was the big kid of the family. .
Dealing with all being a strong young boy then all the sudden puberty hit me. This was a struggle for me. I thought I had to protect my so called tough guy image for my age and now I"m having growth spurts that made me uncoordinated and then my voice changing. All this can be and is embarrassing to a young man. And on top of all that now I have girls to deal with. They had never been a distraction to me before. I had played with tomboys before on little league teams and now things weren't the same anymore.
I really was taught how to be a little boy. If things were different in my household I guess things might have turned out differently. If I was made to play with dolls and dress up clothes instead of playing in the dirt or with footballs, basketballs, and baseballs I might not be as masculine as I am. Socialization is definitely part of becoming a male.
