Beowulf And Eaters Of The Dead

One time that Beowulf does mention something about everyday living, is the events that take place in the hall. It tells us that they feast, drink, have music and stories and this shows us what went on but, the thing is that it lacks detail. In Eaters of the Dead, we get details that men would have their way with many women and about the stories that they like to hear. When Ibn Fadlan tells them the story of Abu Kassim, the Northmen decided that they did not like the story because of the idea that this man has a burden that will not leave. This shows us what they don't like to hear. Also, Ibn Fadlan tells us about the importance of hospitality and how the Northmen compete to provide the best service. In Beowulf they never explain the importance of hospitality even though we see it at the hall. In Beowulf the reader is supposed to know that hospitality is important. .
             .
             Eaters of the Dead also provides us with a better view of women in Viking culture. The women are described in great detail. Fadlan tells us that the women are as dirty as the men. He tells us that they stink and have greater freedom than the women in his country. He says that they do not have to wear veils and can make advances toward men. We also get in great detail the appearance of Viking women. He tells us that they are as tall as the men and are very skinny even though they eat a great deal. They have long hair that they tie up and that they wear pins of silver or wood and neck chains of gold and silver and bracelets in the form of dragons and snakes. This is a very detail account of the women in the north. From Beowulf we can gather very little about the nature of women. We see in one instance that Beowulf gives Hygd a neck ring and a jewel which made her breasts more beautiful. The other important task that women seem to have is carrying drinks. Hrothgar's daughter does this and people seem to look favorably upon this.
