Countries such as China have a much different view on the death penalty. When a criminal in China is found guilty of a crime punishable by death, the execution is scheduled a week after the sentencing. All those convicted are placed in a line and shot. The bodies and organs of the criminals are then used in medical transplants and the cost of the bullet is billed to their family.
Over the course of history, a wide range of methods has been used to execute people. In medieval times people were usually decapitated by sword or the guillotine. Offenders who had committed political crimes were drawn and quartered. In the United States during the witch-hunts, thousands of women were burned at the stake.
In modern times though, these methods were seen as too violent, or cruel. In the United States, various methods are used to kill offenders:.
1) Lethal Injection- the offender is strapped to a bed and a lethal drug such as cyanide is injected into their bloodstream.
2) Electric Chair- the offender is strapped to a large chair. Conductors are placed around the offender's head and wrists. A large amount of electricity is then sent through the offender's body, killing them.
3) Gas Chamber- the offender is strapped into a large airtight chamber. A deadly mixture of chemicals is slowly released into the chamber killing the offender.
