Christopher Columbus

In congress today, there was a vote whether or not to keep Columbus Day as a National Holiday. The majority of my fellow Congressmen wanted to revise Columbus Day, and make it an explorers day. However, I am in favor of Columbus Day, because the way our nation has flourished is partly due to him. Below I will try to explain to all of my fellow Colorado constituents why I felt this way.
The first thing that comes to my mind about Columbus is the way he governed the Native Americans. Although Columbus might have been brutal and cruel in his ways, He established the first true government that the Native Americans ever had. He brought order to the Native Americans lives and established a huge part of government that is still used today, Currency. We should continue celebrating Columbus Day for governing our country.
Columbus also brought slavery to America. Columbus did not bring any slaves form the Old World or from Africa, he only used Native Americans. Columbus was only exercising the idea of slavery that had been going on for thousands of years before Columbus arrived in America. Slavery was needed to help keep North America working smoothly. Columbus Day should still be celebrated because he kept our great nation in working order.
On the voyages to and from America Columbus and his crew brought diseases that the people in the New World had never seen. Although many Native Americans died from disease, Columbus didn't bring over disease on purpose. He also had vaccines for the diseases which the Native Americans probably could have exchanged goods for vaccines. Eventually Columbus help the Native Americans become immune to most of the diseases, making him a hero who should always be remembered in America.
Some people may argue that Columbus might not have been the person who first discovered America. However, he was the first person to come to America and make a significant change for the better.
