Half of the schools in the Cranston district have more than half of their students scoring at of above the standards on standardized exams compared to the 35% of schools in Rhode Island. There is one fact that is disturbing, teens that are not in school and not working is at 12.1% compared to the state percentage of 8.1%. This could show that some students after high school are not doing anything with themselves (Kidscount 2002).
Cranston High School West The School District.
According to the Kidscount web site there are approximately 17,000 children that attend schools in Cranston. Cranston High School West has about fifteen hundred students that attend the school. Some students are enrolled through the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center (CACTC), which students can come from a few different communities, such as Scituate, Johnston, and Ponaganset. The school has an average student to teacher ratio of 13 students for every 1 teacher. In the Cranston West district there are only 4% of students that are eligible for the subsidized lunch program and 94% of the student body is White, 1% black, 2% Hispanic, and 3% Asian. There is no bi-lingual education and only about 13% of the students receive some sort of resource of special education. .
Through the infoworks data page I also found that the students in the Cranston west district have a graduation rate of 88.31%, which is higher than the statewide rate of 81.13%. This also goes along with the schools drop out rate of 11.69% of students, which is once again better than the states drop out rate of 18.87%. They also have a good attendance percentage of 90%, only two percentage points below the states 92%. One last important fact that deals with the parents in this community, 61% of the parents in this district went onto college and 51% graduated from college (Infoworks 2002). .
Subject Area Performance.
On the infoworks web page it reported that in mathematics the school had recorded very low scores.
