Smith was am army official who raped a girl with intent to rape one more. Mr. Smith was sentenced to life in prison but later had a term reduction and only had to serve sixteen years (Humphrey). Bernard W. Smith should have been sentenced to death for the terrible crimes he committed. Apparently the judge thought that sixteen years was good enough for someone who raped an innocent girl. When Bernard Smith was released, how do you think the family of the victim felt? Appropriate justice was not served in this case. Would you like to live next to someone who had raped children? Would you want to raise a family in a neighborhood where there are released prisoners who have raped kids? In Grand Rapids, a man is coming back with in the next year from prison after he has been there decades. He is going to live with his mother in a rather populated rural section just outside of downtown Grand Rapids. The township is fighting him moving back there because no one wants to live in the same neighborhood as a convicted murder and rapist. This wouldn't be a problem if Michigan had the death penalty because he would probably have already been sentenced to death.
