Divorce: Today And Yesterday

The woman's husband wanted to share himself with other women and spread his love to others and experience free love and surprisingly his wife permitted this because in those days divorce was not as common. Unfortunately the couple divorced some years later because the man could not stop committing adultery. The addition of more grounds for divorce and the elimination of the need to appear in court make it much easier for couples to divorce today and this is also a contribution to the rise in divorce.
Domestic violence has also become a very clear indication of a failed marriage. I have a friend that experienced domestic violence. The abuse started out petty and had gotten considerably worse whereas she finally ended up in the hospital emergency room and had staples put into her head. She stayed with him on the promise that he would never hurt her again, however that was a lie because he ended up in jail and she finally filed for divorce. Women and men who suffer physical abuse do not only feel the physical pain but also psychological and emotional pain as well. In the present day, it has become easier for a woman to leave an abusive situation than it was thirty years ago. This is mainly due to support groups and shelters for battered women.
Another reason for the rise in divorce is the lack of communication among couples. Lack of communication is when a couple reaches the point that they cannot discuss daily matters or come to a common ground, so the lack of communication causes a bridge between them. In the past, it was almost unheard of to divorce over a lack of communication because it was not considered much of a problem; consequently couples would deny that there was a problem so therefore they would stay together more often. Today, we feel that if we cannot communicate with each other we cannot make a marriage work, therefore, we resort to divorce. If more couples would seek marriage counseling, perhaps the divorce rate would be a little lower.
