Dystopian Themes In The Novels 1984 And Brave New World


Although Orwell and his family led a somewhat privileged life, they were not very wealthy. Like most families, they were dependent on the British Empire for the well-being and lifestyle. In 1907 they returned to England to live at Henley. Orwell attended school in Sussex at the age of eight, but eventually won scholarships to Wellington and Eton. Orwell wanted to be a writer since an early age, as he described in Why I Write. Orwell joined the Indian Imperial Police in 1922, but resigned in 1927 after a period of travel and action. He resigned to follow his love of writing and because he was following a system of government which he did not believe in. George Orwell became sick with tuberculosis in 1938 and spent the winter in Morocco, before joining the BBC in 1941 as a producer in the Indian section of the eastern service. Late in 1945, he settled in Jura, a small island off Scotland, and wrote 1984. Part of the gloom of the book is due to his dealing with tuberculosis. George Orwell eventually died in 1950 ("George" n. pag.). .
             One dystopian theme that can be found in the novels 1984 and Brave New World is psychological manipulation. Orwell uses this theme to show how the government overwhelms ones independent thought. Giant Telescreens spew an indefinite stream of propaganda to make an attempt at disguising the failures and shortcomings of the Party.              Still yet the peoples sexual desires are suppressed and sex is seen as a duty instead of an enjoyable activity. They also channel any and all frustration of the people into a display of hatred against the Party's enemies ("Themes, Motifs" 2). .
             The psychological manipulation theme is also rather prominent in Huxley's Brave New World.
