Environment Affecting Behavior

.
According to Peggy Noonan of the Wall Street Journal, children are like fish in the water "when the water is polluted the fish become sick. For example, the children involved in the Columbine shooting were isolated from other classmates, and at times teased and bantered. The environment that those children were in was very uncomfortable due to their peers causing them to desire a sort of revenge. According to Dr. Laura Schlessinger, impressionable children that are surrounded by evil, the more influenced, tempted, seduced and intrigued by evil they become. "Evil often not only wins, but is also defended, protected, and venerated (Schlessinger, par. 7)."" Parents who defend their children when their child is wrong, are not only defending their child, but they are defending evil and showing their child that it is not wrong to do evil things. .
According to John Holt, there are three different kinds of disciplines; the Discipline of Nature, Discipline of Society, and the Discipline of Superior Force. "The Discipline of Nature or of Reality is when a child is trying to do something real, if he/she does the wrong thing or doesn't do the right one, he/she doesn't get the result he/she wants A child meets this kind of discipline every time he/she tries to do something, which is why it is so important in school to give children more chances to do things, instead of reading or listening to someone talk (or pretending to) (Holt, par. 1)."" If a child does not get the response that he/she is looking for, the child will know that he/she needs to try again. With this kind of discipline a child is not judged or harmed emotionally by something a person may say to the child, but merely given another chance to reach his/her desired goal. The Discipline of Culture according to Holt is "What People Really Do-. "Man is a social, a cultural animal. Children sense around them this culture, this network of agreements, customs, habits and rules binding the adults together.
