Gay and Lesbian marriages is a major social issue that blankets the United States today. I place it in the same category of social issues as abortion. This kind of issue has very strong viewpoints from both sides. There is the anti marriage point of view from a large majority of very strict Catholics. These people belive that the bible tells them that homosexuality is not what God intended and thus is not acceptable. The leading protest for gay rights and gay marriages is by gay advocacy groups, and other people who just believe that ones sexual orientations their own business.
My personal opinion on the situation may be a prejudice one, but it is one that I believe in. I believe that ones own sexual orientation is their own business. I also believe that same sex marriages should be allowed to take place, but these people should not be allowed to adopt children. In ""Nebraskans to vote on Most Sweeping Ban on Gay Union" (Belluck 2000), a very conservative state is proposing to pass an amendment to their Constitution "that not only bans gay marriages but also declares same-sex civil unions and domestic partnerships invalid. This is a very strong law that will just make people of this orientation, leave the state to get married. This will limit their rights. .
As a married couple, they are given more rights that husbands and wives are afforded, but by passing this ban, they lose these rights.
In "A Times Policy on Gay unions Stirs press Waters" (Jerkowitz 2002) gay advocacy groups are getting on the backs of newspapers that are not willing to print the announcements of gay unions. Most newspapers have policies that allow for this, but gay unions are rarely announced in these papers. Spokespeople for the newspapers say that their just aren't a big number of gay marriage announcements being sent in to get printed, and that is why they are not printed. "A lot of gay and lesbian people don't realize that the listed newspapers accept such announcement" (Jurkowitz 1).
