In the wake of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, immigration policies worldwide have undergone numerous changes and Canada has followed suit. The criteria used to evaluate possible immigrants have become tougher and harsher than ever before. Not only has there been racial profiling at the borders, it has also found its way into the immigration sector. The post immigration process has also become a pain as the new laws tend to hurt residing immigrants. Due to the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, the implementation of new and stringent policies have had a devastating effect on immigrants entering Canada.
Since the events of September 11th, the criterion used to evaluate possible immigrants has become much tougher and harsher. The qualifications expected of skilled worker applicants have increased, which would result in a decrease in the quantity of individuals applicable to enter (Bayat, 2). It can be argued that before the events of September 11th, it was already tough for skilled workers to apply for immigration, let alone find an employer in Canada. People in developing countries will suffer due to the fact that their academic qualifications may not be accepted due to the conditions of the country or the validity of their education. These people already have a harsh time finding job in Canada, since employers pass them over and employ North-American talent. .
Not only that, but since the implementation of new regulations in the post-September 11th era, the famous Canadian "Point System" has been modified and will make it difficult for some people as they will face tougher evaluations (Bayat, 1). People in non-Anglophone and/or Francophone countries will have difficulties due to how the points for language are calculated. Language points have been weighed more heavily than before and this deters immigrants from entering Canada. People will lose lots of points just because they are not fluent at speaking English, which seems pointless because some of those people will be extremely talented and may be able to speak English fluently if given the chance.
