John Glenn

John Glenn was one of the first American astronauts, and the first American to orbit the Earth. John Glenn is a person that represented all of the characteristics that an American male would like to have. John Glenn always knew what to say and when to say it. Everyone that John Glenn approached or was approached by was treated with respect. Glenn worked hard and did everything that he could do to help the space program. I think that John Glenn was the glue that kept the team of astronauts together. .
I liked John Glenn because he was a true leader. Whenever there was a question that needed to be answered, Glenn said what Americans wanted to hear. He had a 50/50 proposition that said it was important to travel into space and since they had the talents to do it , they would. John Glenn was not a guy that liked to go out and party. Some of the other astronauts began to drink alcohol and chase women. Glenn disapproved of these actions because he said that they were supposed to be role models to all Americans. He decided that he should confront these men because they had a job to do. After Glenn retired from being an astronaut, he served four terms of senate in 1974, 1980, 1986, and in 1992. He ran for president of the United States in 1984, but he dropped out after losing a primary ("About John Glenn" 4). John Glenn was probably the most successful of all of the astronauts. .
John Glenn was a true all-American man. Some of the other astronauts like Gus Grisham and Gordon Cooper were cocky and arrogant. Glenn just went to work everyday and did his job. He felt that sending an astronaut to space was a big deal, and did everything that he could to help achieve that. Glenn designed some of the early cockpit layouts and control functioning designs for the Apollo Project ("John Glenn: Biographical Data" 2). John Glenn was a happily married man. He and his wife Anne, his hometown sweetheart, had a very loving relationship ("About John Glenn" 1).
