Funding High School Athletics


Intercollegiate and professional programs will use other techniques to fund their organizations. High schools are limited in amount of endorsement money that they receive from corporations. College institutions and professional organizations receive a large portion of their funds from sponsorship deals with clothing, equipment and other endorsement deals. High school athletic programs also do not have the backing of media conglomerates like higher level sports programs.
             Operational Definitions.
             Student athlete- any person enrolled in a high school and participating in a school sponsored interscholastic sport or activity.
             Budget cuts- the reduction of money allocated towards a particular area. Budget cuts have resulted in the elimination of some extracurricular programs and teacher salaries.
             Booster club- a group of individuals from the community who strive to increase the support of athletics at a high school through fund raising and community involvement.
             Extracurricular Activity- an activity that is sponsored by the high school and competes against other schools in the state. These include sports offered at the high school, the band, debate teams, SAT teams, and any other team that competes for titles approved by the South Carolina High School League.
             Participation fee- money that is required to be paid by the student athlete before joining a interscholastic team or other extracurricular activity.
             Sponsor- any corporation or individual who pledges a sum of money to help support the athletic program at a particular high school.
             Significance of the Paper.
             The significance of the study is its value to the district administration and community members in that it details the specific perils that may effect a school district on its quest to attain higher funding. If these mistakes are brought to the forefront, then the readers will less likely make the same errors. The community members need to know exactly where and how their tax dollars are being allocated and handled by the school administrators.
