It took the two of us over 30 minutes to knock the wind out of Batman's sails, hit him a couple more times for good measure, scoop him into the pillowcase and drop him out our second story window. I rolled my eyes and thought, "Marilyn, if you could see this man now, you wouldn't even have a paper to write! I can't keep him awake to communicate!" I was impressed with her writing, however. She has definitely hit the nail on the head with the differences in communication between men and women. Not only blaming language differences between the genders on genetic makeup and heredity, Marilyn Sachs goes a step further and claims our social experiences can also play a part in our language/communication development. "We respond to boys and girls differently. Our expectations of them are different. Behavior that we tolerate from one sex may be less acceptable from the other sex. For example, boys yell, girls cry" (Sachs). Wow, I had not thought about it in those terms. How true is that? Looking at my own experiences in raising three boys, I tend to only let them cry so long over certain things. My oldest son was worried about losing his football game last Saturday. The Warriors had gone undefeated so far, and the toughest team was next to play.
