Also, Gina Kytr, Seaside School District's nurse, agrees with the idea of using marijuana for medical purposes. When asked if she thinks the medical use of marijuana is a good idea she states, "Yes, under certain circumstances such as nausea, from cancer and eye pressure from glaucoma." Kytr also states that this is a very controversial subject (Kytr interview).
Groups like the U.S. Institute of Medicine recognize several medical conditions such as diabetes, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, and metastatic cancer. David Slade, U.S. Supreme Court member, states where the most common treatments for these diseases are usually a failure. " Herbal cannabis significantly relieves their suffering when other medications do not" (Slade 48).
Also a lot of patients use medical marijuana as a last resort for pain relief associated with spastic disorder, glaucoma, and chemotherapy (cancer and AIDS). Patients with these diseases using marijuana seem to get great therapeutic benefits. Chemotherapy patients get help from marijuana by the fact that it reduces vomiting and nausea, but it also is an appetite stimulus to AIDS patients who are wasting away ("Medical Marijuana in Nausea").
The advanced stages of many illnesses include: intractable pain, vomiting and nausea. These are horrible side effects which accompany these illnesses. "Smoking marijuana has brought relief to thousands of people suffering from these side effects" (Stempsey 15). Marijuana does things like restore the appetite to AIDS patients, its also reduced the pressure behind the eyes with glaucoma and relieve chronic migraines epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. "But anyone with a disease who turns to pot must break the federal law that makes marijuana illegal in all circumstances" (Brookhiser 9). Many American's were surprised when a report released by the White House's drug czar stated. "Scientific study funded by the White House's drug czar reported in March that marijuana active ingredients seem to have medical value, particularly for pain relief" (Dreyfuss 32).
