Cable Vs DSL

Both corporations have been busily upgrading their network technologies to bring the consumer an Internet connection of highest quality and speed. The competition between the cable modem and the DSL (digital subscriber line) has brought out a new stream of options for every type of consumer. The development of new technology has bombarded consumers with options regarding their Internet connections, but which is the better service, cable modem or DSL? The focus of this paper is to demonstrate the pros and cons of both cable modem and DSL for the average consumer as well as for a small business. .
Let us first look at the DSL. DSL, or Digital Subscribers Line, is just one of the available technologies for bringing a high-bandwidth connection to both small businesses and homes over ordinary copper telephone lines. These copper wires are intertwined together to form a type of cabling known as the "Twisted Pair." The telephone company uses this twisted pair cabling to connect your small business or home to their central office. It is important to keep in mind that our conventional phone service was created in order to allow two or more people to communicate with each other using a voice (analog) transmission. "An input device such as a phone set takes an acoustic signal (which is a natural analog signal) and converts it into an electrical equivalent in terms of volume (signal amplitude) and pitch (frequency of wave change)" . Given that the telephone company's signaling is set up to use analog wave transmission, it is easier for it to use analog as the way to send information between your device and the telephone company. "This is the reasoning behind the necessity of a modem in your computer- so that it can demodulate the analog signal and turn its values into the string of 0 and 1 value that are called digital information."1 .
Analog transmission only uses a small portion of the available bandwidth of the twisted pair wires.
