Poetry Essay

Like something was wrapped around their throat and they were almost being choked. Nothing could leak out of their mouth because there was no leak in their throat. "We speak through sickly smiles and warn" . The metaphor that our smiles are sickly suggests that these people were not smiling at all. The people had to warn other people of the accident and are now not smiling at all. Sickly smiles could also be a feeling of sickness about the gruesomeness of the accident. The author is getting a message to us that the on-lookers of the accident are attempting to come up with some kind of rationalization of the accident using their common sense. None of them however are able to come up with a reason using their common sense because they are confused on why this actually happens. Why people have to die so suddenly. This goes beyond our common sense and brings us to somewhere else. Metaphorical questions are implied in this poem like "Why do people have to die like this? The author uses many metaphors to give us a visual of the actual accident and also the intensity of it because of how the people around the accident were acting. .
             Rhyme in this poem does not exist. When the author was writing the poem rhyme wasn't something that would have made the poem any stronger. The poem does not make sense for the onlookers and the victims. The author decided that rhyme would have given the poem something it didn't have, logic and reason. I think this is why the author left rhyme out in the poem.
             Tone is a big part of this poem. The author is very anxious to find out something in the poem. They want to find out why it is that people have to die so suddenly and in accidents this way. It doesn't seem fair to them that in an instant their life and the lives of so many other people can be changed in such a fatal way. In my opinion the author must have had some personal experience with a car accident. The way the poem is described in such great detail makes me think about this.
