Examining Gender Gaps in Heterosexual's Opions

After being given the topic for discussion, participants were informed of their right to withdraw at any time during the research. Participants were asked to discuss their opinions and views of adoption rights for lesbians and gay men. The participants were then left alone in the room to discuss the subject for 5-6 minutes.
             Both focus groups were video-taped for later analysis. Behaviour observations for each participant were collected at 10 second intervals, for 5 minutes. A group of 4 researchers, comparing results for rater-reliability, used the following table to code observed behaviour:.

             5 Agreeing with others "Yes, that's right""Yeah I agree- Nodding head.
             6 Clarifies point raised by another "So you are saying-"Do you mean- Raise figure.
             7 Asks thoughtful questions "Do you think people realise what they are doing?" Gesture to the speaker.
             8 Disagrees with others "No you are wrong there.""I don't think so." Shakes head.
             9 Talks over others .
             10 Gets heated/angry Speed up speech, change in voice .
             Results and Discussion.
             There was found to be great deal of difference between the two focus groups, in both interaction and content. The female group discussed the subject sensibly and listened to each others" points of view, whereas the male group tended to make lots of jokes, laughed frequently, were much louder in volume and often spoke over the top of other speakers.
