Self Esteem

Taylor and Lou Ann both have their high and low points in the story, but that is normal for a person. Their ups and downs are clearly shown and represent how a person changes with time. Your self-esteem is most likely always changing, but you may not always notice it, but others do. You are at your best when self-esteem is high and you trust and believe in yourself. Low self-esteem can become a major problem for people because they sometimes don't care about themselves and others. As we read through the book, we see that Lou Ann and Taylor's self-esteem is constantly changing at different paces.
As they are very different people, Lou Ann and Taylor both share good and bad times. If you look closely into the text, some of these times are almost identical. In the beginning of the story, they both are starting a new life, Taylor being away from home and on her own, and Lou Ann without her husband. I think these events gave them a higher self esteem because they both are going to get a new start. In another case, when both Lou Ann and Taylor get a job, their self-esteem is boosted once again. They are going to have income and will have started a new life on a good pace. The two women had a quite sorrowing experience when Esperanza and Estevan came into town. Each of them had their own reason, but it caused individual trouble.
I find the differences between Lou Ann and Taylor more obvious. When they found out that Turtle could be taken away, Taylor was very mad and Lou Ann could care less. Lou Ann's self-esteem stayed the same and Taylor's dropped because she felt she had failed. In another event, When Taylor and Lou Ann moved in together, Taylor felt that Lou Ann was helping her too much around the house. Lou Ann was feeling good about herself, and Taylor was worried because she didn't know what was taking place. In the beginning of the story, Lou Ann was always worried about what other people thought about her, this made her self-conscious.
