Seeds of Hope is the diary of a young 14-year-old girl named Susanna Fairchild in the year 1849. In the start of this diary they are aboard the California, a ship. She lives with her 16-year-old sister Clara and her father, a doctor. This book is mainly set in Miner's Creek, California when their Papa gets gold fever and wants to get enough gold so he can have a decent life.
In the start of this book Susanna is aboard the ship the California going through her mother who just died things for the first time since her mother's death. She was thinking about how she and her sister missed their mother so much when their father comes in and tells them that he will stay in California to mine for gold. It takes his daughters a few more days to decide but they decide to go with him. .
After a few weeks they get off the ship and go to California and find a place to stay and they decide to go to Miner's Creek and stay. First they found an older funny person that had bells tied in his beard. He tell lots of stories and is almost like an uncle. His nickname is Captain Clingbeard. Clinking He hears soon after that his old friend Jesse Blue is here too and this made Papa smile since the first time Mother died. Later he goes out mining gold for the next few days and makes about five dollars in a week. Time goes on and he finds his friend. They decide to go out and have a huge mining trip. They left the girls out in the house and went out to cave. .
The girls worried about Papa for a while. First a big tree fell very close to the house that it nearly destroyed it. Next Jesse came to visit them and give them some money. Then their cousin Rosita came over for a visit and to tell she is going to have a baby that will need Papa to deliver it.
