The Election Of 1812

The election of 1812 was one of the most controversial elections in United States history. The election was like a war, fought out between two veteran opponents. On one side there was the Democratic-Republican candidate and on the other there was the Federalist candidate. This election like all presidential elections would help to shape the nation today as we know it.
The two veteran opponents of which I have spoken of are none other than James Madison, the defending champion(former president) and De Witt Clinton, the challenger(former NY senator). James Madison was the so called "Father of the constitution" and was more well known than his opponent. Madison had been a part of the Continental Congress as well as the Federalist Papers. Madison first went into office when he defeated Charles C. Pickney. De Witt Clinton also had a very successful career as a politician. He had held every major political position in the state of NY. He was a senator, representative, Mayor of NYC, governor, and canal commissioner. As the commissioner he helped pushed for the construction of the Erie Canal. .
The major issue in the election of 1812 was the war of 1812, and understandably so. There were two sides, the people who were for the war and thus siding with Madison. Then you had those who were against and sided with Clinton. One group of voters that Clinton didn't have to worry about persuading were the shipbuilders in New England, who because of the war could do no trading and in turn make no money. .
The result of this election was for the most part conceivable. James Madison won the election in a land slide, with his 128 electoral votes to Clinton's 89. It turns out that the most popular man won. Clinton took with him all of New England except for Vermont and Madison took just about every where else.
In conclusion I believe James Madison won because of many key factors which were in his favor. For example some of his earlier deeds like helping to ratify the constitution.
