Theatre And Its Consequences

Many oppressions and injustices have overwhelmed communities all over the world. However, artists have discovered a way to lighten these burdens by creating what is now known as popular theatre. This can be defined as a performance done for a community and occasionally by a community, in order to depict their predicaments and discuss them as a group. This dramatization of worldwide inequalities is an effective tool that can be utilized to work towards societal change, in spite of its limitations. .
To begin, popular theatre brings people together. It gives individuals the opportunity to share experiences and ordeals with other people consequently making them believe like they belong somewhere. Commonality is also created and acknowledged by all participants. They recognize their own pattern of life and realize that they are not alone. Even when confronted with a personal situation, you are more likely to inquire someone for his or her advice, than deduce a solution on your own. Thus, it is not so preposterous to want to participate in a type of theatre where people are heard and helped. An example that illustrates this point of view is in an article about a project in the north-central area of Regina that uses this technique. Its motive is described in the following excerpt "Like other successful community plays, it brought together members of a community with diverse interests and backgrounds. For both the cast and the audience, it offered a bridge between alienated groups, especially native and white"(131). This type of theatre has built across the world stronger and more open-minded communities. .
Secondly, it aids individuals in viewing their dilemmas in order to lessen their load of emotions, perhaps even find a solution. In forum theatre, for example, the community simulates several scenes that lead to a crisis. The role of the audience is to intervene with the actors and give their impute on how they should have avoided the situation.
