Fidel Castro And The Cuban Revolution


Cubans were always fond of this, but soon socialism eradicated it and turned Cuba into a "tropical Moscow." All these celebrations were prohibited by Fidel's order. (Franqui 169) He also abolished their religion, ideas, political parties, and he went even further and abolished the people. Castro's intentions were to transform Cuba into a country where absolutely no one danced, sang, or even smiled. Castro wanted a country that was serious in everything that was done. A country where happiness didn't exist, and no one had the right of contradicting him. He probably thought that if Cuba became a solemn country, they would focus more on him, therefore gaining him more power and attention. Since he was looked upon as a cruel man, who took away something that meant so much to the Cubans. In Jacob Timberman's opinion Cuban turned out as " a land of silences forged out of apathy or fear." (Time 84) .
             Castro came into power in the absence of Batista. He was a good orator, leading millions of Cuban youth to believe in the new government reform. At first only head of the armed forced, he participated in passing more than 1500 new laws. In 1959 the Agrarian Reform Law, and Urban Reform law which they broke up, land holdings and redistributed to the poor. (Edu.Castro) In 1961, he canceled plan elections, and suspended the 1940 constitution. In that same year he announced plans to make Cuba a socialist nation. The "New Man theory" was a new mind set into transforming Cuba into a communist nation. All political parties were disbanded the state controlled the press. Castro's communist regime government did introduce the much needed health call, and education during its first four decades. Today the majority of the population remains dirt poor, everything from gasoline to food was rationed. (Osvaldo and Roberto Salas 149) .
             There was opposition inside and outside this revolution.
